Ash cloud causes further travel misery

Published on May 18, 2010

London’s two main airports, Heathrow and Gatwick, were closed yesterday morning due to the cloud of volcanic ash. The two hubs were completely closed until 7am local time on Monday and were subject to disrupted services until the early afternoon. Several other airports in the UK and mainland Europe, including Amsterdam and Manchester, were also subject to restrictions. Many Asian carriers were forced to cancel or re-route fl ights yesterday. Singapore Airlines’ flights to London and Amsterdam yesterday were diverted to Paris and Frankfurt respectively, while Qantas’s morning service from to Heathrow was re-routed to Frankfurt. Malaysia Airlines’ London and Amsterdam flights were delayed until late Monday night and early Tuesday morning. The majority of flight restrictions have been lifted today, but delays are likely to continue as airports try to clear the backlog of flights.
