Shanxi quake fears prompt evacuation

Thousands of people fled their homes in China’s Shanxi province on Monday after rumours of an earthquake sparked panic. According to a China Daily report, residents had gathered in Taiyuan City as early as late Saturday night after rumors that the provincial capital would be the epicenter of a large quake. Shanxi authorities were forced to use TV and radio broadcasts, as well as SMS messaging, to reassure people.
