China to build world’s highest airport in Tibet

China will set a new record for the world’s highest airport with the construction of a new hub in Tibet. According to a Xinhua report the airport, planned for Nagqu prefecture, would be at an altitude of 4,436 metres - 102 metres higher than Bamda Airport in Tibet’s Qamdo prefecture, which has been the world’s highest airport since opening in 1994. The CNY1.8 billion (US$263 million) airport will be completed by 2011.
