According to Thailand’s Daily News, low-cost carrier AirAsia has made a proposal to the Thai government requesting permission to launch direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Hua Hin by the end of 2017. As it is, many travelers flying into Bangkok’s overloaded Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang international airports make a beeline for the beach. While Hua Hin is only a few hours by car from either hub, heavy traffic on the highway can sometimes turn the journey into an unnecessarily lengthy excursion. Direct international flights would take some of the pressure off of Don Muang and get visitors to the seaside faster.

Although a decision is anticipated within the next few weeks, a few matters need to be sorted out before the proposal can proceed. For starters, adequate immigration facilities would need to be put in place for international arrivals and, according to Darun Saengchai of the AO, AirAsia is currently requesting that the airport waive rental and landing fees initially. Should the plan go through, it could be major boost to local tourism in Hua Hin
