The homesharing company that already revolutionized how we stay has big plans to change the way we travel.
Although most travelers in a foreign land want to make meaningful connections with locals, that’s often easier said than done. Fortunately, in recent years tech companies have been finding ways to bridge the cultural gap. On March 16 in Thailand, Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia unveiled the homesharing giant’s new concept for how to help travelers venture off the cookie-cutter tourist path. The newly launched Trips gives local experts a platform to offer unique tours and cultural experiences to visitors.
Offerings in Thailand range from a Thai fruit carving class from a master of the art, an intensive muay Thai training session with Matthew Deane, official Master of Ceremonies (MC) at Rangsuit International Boxing Stadium, and a craft cocktail making class with a mixologist from a hip Thonglor bar. Although Trips is brand-new, it already features more than 800 experiences in 13 countries, including in-demand Asian destinations such as Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo and Seoul. By the end of the year, the company plans to launch in 50 cities around the globe.
