Accor seals deal for new Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbor

Sofitel will launch a major new MICE hotel in Sydney after Accor sealed an agreement to manage the hotel planned for development at the new Sydney International Convention Centre (ICC).

Construction of the 35-storey hotel is expected to start by the end of 2014, with the property due for completion in the second quarter of 2017. To be officially named the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbor, the hotel will offer approximately 600 rooms and suites on the doorstep of the new ICC.

"The new Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbor hotel will offer exceptional Travel Daily Asiaquality accommodation and service, matching the hotel's iconic location and cutting-edge design to become the city's most popular luxury address," said Accor Pacific's chief operating officer, Simon McGrath.

"With Sofitel's continued growth in Asia Pacific and projects such as Sofitel So Singapore, Sofitel So Auckland and Sofitel Wellington, Accor is on track to become a global leader in the luxury hotel space.

"This new flagship hotel complements a strong network for the brand in this region and we look forward to welcoming Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbor to our luxury portfolio," he added.

Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbor forms part of the NSW Government's AU$2.5 billion (US$2.3bn) transformation plan for Darling Harbor, which includes the creation of the ICC and a new entertainment precinct.

"We believe that the new Darling Harbor precinct will be one of the world's most exciting urban renaissance projects with the new ICC Sydney and the upgrades to the neighbouring Pyrmont, Ultimo and Haymarket districts set to make Darling Harbor a first-choice destination for business, convention and leisure travelers," said Jerry Schwartz, who recently signed an agreement to purchase the ICC hotel.
