Asian leads world for mobile hotel bookings – study

AsiaRooms and Lenovo study reveals high level of mobile penetration.
Asian consumers are the most willing to search and book hotel rooms using their mobile devices, a new study has found.
According to a report commissioned by AsiaRooms.com and Lenovo, 59% of Asian respondents ranked mobile searches as their main way of looking for accommodation online, 13% higher than the global average.
Thailand was the highest ranked country, with 65% of users searching for rooms using their mobiles. Fifty percent of Asian travelers also use their mobiles to compare prices of accommodation, 10% higher than the global average, and 33% of consumers in Asia said they have booked a hotel via their mobile devices, 8% higher than the rest of the world.
"With Asia seeing a boom in smartphone penetration rates, the usage of mobile devices whether for accessing the internet, mobile commerce, online banking or entertainment, will certainly continue to influence the lifestyle habits of consumers," said Terence Ng, director of global ecosystem & cloud services for Lenovo.
"It is heartening to see consumers increasingly integrating mobile devices into the various aspects of their lives and we will continue our focus on creating the best devices and building our ecosystem to provide new experiences for consumers."
The study also revealed that 63% of Asian respondents said that they are likely to use mobile devices in future for booking accommodation – 10% higher than global average. The top reasons quoted for respondents not wanting to use mobile are that the content is hard to see on the device (40%) and that the internet connection on mobile devices is slow or unstable (35%).
Overall, 75% of people in Asia indicated that they make hotel reservations online, which is 10% higher than global average. Singapore ranks the highest at 84%.
In total, 83% of the respondents in Asia said they own a mobile phone with internet access.
