Tokyo station to become Grand Central’s sister

Published on Feb 4, 2013

A ceremony will be held in New York next month to mark the start of a ‘sister station’ relationship between Tokyo Station and Grand Central Station. Representatives from Japan Railways (JR) and New York's Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) will gather at Grand Central Station's Vanderbilt Hall on 19 March 2013 to confirm the partnership. The move forms part of the Japan Tourism Agency’s annual 'Japan Week' promotional event in New York, which this year is centered on Grand Central Station. Other activities planned for Japan Week include a traditional Japanese 'tachinomiya' (standing bar) being set up at Grand Central Station to sell sake, and stalls selling 'ekiben', or bento boxes, to commuters, like those sold at railway stations across Japan.
