Surfer rides highest wave

An American surfer has ridden what is believed to be the highest wave in the sport’s history. Garrett McNamara caught the 100-foot (30m) wave last Monday off the coast of Portugal. The feat broke his own world record - a 24m wave he rode in the same location in November 2011. While experts still have to confirm the record-breaking wave, onlookers believe the wave to be approximately 30m high. “You are just going so fast,” McNamara told ABC television. “It’s really, really similar to snowboarding on giant mountains. And you’re just chattering, flying down this bumpy, bumpy mountain. Your brain is getting rattled. Your whole body is getting rattled.” He added that he was relieved to have avoided a rocky section of the coast.
