Xinjiang tourism surges in 2012

The number of tourists visiting Xinjiang, in the far northwest of China, surged in 2012. According to data from the region's tourism bureau, reported by Xinhua, Xinjiang welcomed 48.6 million visitors last year - 23% more than in 2011. Tourism revenues climbed 30% to CNY57.6 billion (US$9.2bn). There was no indication of how many of the arrivals or receipts were generated by international visitors. Authorities attributed the growth to the launch of new fl ights and rail services to the province from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
