Aceh women banned from “improper” motorbike riding

Published on Jan 8, 2013

A city in the Indonesian province of Aceh has banned women from straddling motorbikes when riding as a passenger behind a male. AFP reported that authorities in the city of Lhokseumawe included the ruling as part of a series of new laws intended to uphold public decency. These also include banning women wearing tight trousers. Under the motorbike ruling, women must ride side-saddle, with both legs on the same side of the bike. Women will be permitted to straddle a motorbike if they are driving it, but only if they are “dressed in a Muslim way”. Authorities were reported saying that the ruling was intended to protect women, as straddling the motorbike “will provoke the male driver”
