Shark fins still on Chinese hotel menus

Published on Dec 19, 2012

Shark fin soup is still on the menus of the vast majority of Chinese hotels, according to a new survey. In a telephone poll, the Beijing based Green Beagle Environment Institute found that 93% of hotels in Beijing, Shenzhen and Fuzhou still serve the controversial dish. The results are improving however; a study in Beijing last year found that only one hotel out of the 131 surveyed did not serve shark fin soup, while in this year’s study 12 properties our of 132 said they had removed it from restaurant menus. “The survey reminded us there is still a long way to go to remove shark fi ns from Chinese hotels and restaurants, but the improved situation in Beijing is encouraging,” a spokesperson for the institute was quoted saying.
