Ski season starts in Urumqi
Published on Nov 26, 2012
Skiers have started flocking to the slopes near the city of Urumqi, in the far west of China. Heavy snow has coated the slopes of the Tian Shan Mountains in the Chinese region of Xinjiang recently, and on Saturday the ski slopes 40km south of Urumqi opened for business. As in nearby Kazakhstan, China is now pushing winter sports tourism in the Tian Shan, with new ‘Western-style’ ski resorts expected to open in the coming years.
