Yunnan quakes kill 80

A major rescue eff ort is underway in southern China’s Yunnan province after a series of earthquakes killed 80 people in the region on Friday. Xinhua reported that 11,000 rescuers had arrived in the hardest-hit areas to clear roads, evacuate residents and search for the missing. More than 800 people were injured in two quakes, which struck close to the border with Guizhou province, and were followed by more than 60 aftershocks. Authorities have warned that the death toll could rise.
