Lhasa's Potala Palace extends visiting hours
Tibet's biggest tourist attraction, the Potala Palace in Lhasa, will extend its opening hours by 3.5 hours this summer. Xinhua reported the palace's administration as saying that the former residence of Tibet's Dalai Lamas would now open at 7.30am, as opposed to 9am, with the closing time put back to 6.40pm, from 4.40pm. The new times will run until October 31, 2012. The longer hours are not expected to result in a surge of visitors however; daily visitor numbers have been limited to 4,000 from July 1, 2012 to limit damage to the building.
