China will build 82 new airports by 2015 in an effort to provide transport links to remote rural areas. Speaking at a news conference in Shanghai recently, Li Jiaxiang, Head of Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said the developments form part of China's broader goal of developing an air transport network that will cover 89% of the total population by 2020. Reported by Xinhua, Li said the majority of the new hubs will be 'feeder airports', connecting remote, rural communities, especially in western China. The Chinese air transport network will still lag behind other large nations however; by 2015 the country will have 230 airports, compared to 700 in Brazil and 19,000 in the US.
