Mount Fuji climbing season commences

07/11/2012

Mount Fuji
has officially opened to climbers. On 1 July, the Fujisan Hongu Sengentaisha Shrine held a ceremony to pray for the safety of climbers during the 2012 climbing season, which lasts until the end of August. More than 30,000 people climb the 3,776-metre active volcano each year, the vast majority of whom take to the slopes during the summer months. Mount Fuji is Japan's highest peak and one of the country's three ‘holy mountains’, along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku.
