Bali's rice fields given UNESCO protection

Published on May 22, 2012

Bali's traditional rice farming and irrigation system has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Recognition of the system, known locally as 'subak', is expected to provide a major boost for Bali's traditional farmers, in the face encroachment by tourism developments. It is estimated that up to 1,000 hectares of rice paddies per year are converted into residential or tourist developments. Subak's inclusion on the UNESCO list was announced on Monday by Indonesia's Deputy Minister for Education & Culture, Windu Nuryanti. (Jakarta Post)
