Tourists will soon be able to access more of the Forbidden City. Authorities are planning to allow tourists to enter the former residence of empresses and imperial concubines - an offence once punishable by death.
The former Beijing imperial palace, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, is expected to receive 15 million visitors in 2012 - one million more than last year, and the China Daily reported authorities as saying that they plan to expand visiting zones from nearly half to two-thirds of the Forbidden City in the near future.
