Jakarta MRT construction to start in May

Construction of Jakarta’s new MRT rail project will start in May 2012, the city’s Governor Fauzi Bowo confi rmed this week. The IDR15.5 trillion (US$1.7 billion) project will initially see a 15.3km north-south line run between Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI, connecting 13 station. This fi rst phase is expected to open in 2016. This line will then be extended in 2018 from Bundaran HI to Kampung Bandan, with a further eight stations. An East-West line from Balaraja to Cikarang is also being planned.
