Japan tourism reaches out through social media

Japanese tourism authorities are embracing the power of social media by inviting popular bloggers and prolifi c tweeters to visit and review areas of the country struck by last year’s earthquake and tsunami. The Tokyo Times reported yesterday that writers from several countries, including China, Spain and the US, will arrive in the country this month to see the progress made since the March disasters and to report in the country’s tourism potential. A total of 10 social media infl uencers will travel Japan in the fi rst quarter of the year, as part of a project that will cost the government about JPY21.5 million (US$280,200).
