Spas reopen in Maldives after closure

Published on Jan 6, 2012

Resorts in the Maldives have been told by the President to reopen their spas after they were ordered to close only days ago. The episode came about after pressure from an Islamic opposition party prompted the Tourism Minister to call for their closure after it was alleged they were connected with “anti-Islamic activities”, or prostitution. According to AP however, President Mohammed Nasheed has allowed the services to open again. Nasheed said Wednesday that he has asked the Supreme Court to decide whether operating spas is against the principles of Islam — a decision that could be critical to the country's economic lifeline.
