Christchurch hit by “violent” quake

Christchurch has been hit by another powerful earthquake. The 5.8-magnitude quake, which a local NZ Herald news reporter described as “violent” struck at 1.58 pm local time today. The extent of the damage is not yet known, but local media reports suggest that up to 15,000 homes are without power, and that Christchurch airport has been evacuated, with flights being diverted. Officials at the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority told Radio New Zealand that many buildings in Christchurch have been evacuated.
