Volcano closes Indonesian airport
Published on Dec 6, 2011
A volcano has erupted in eastern Indonesia, forcing the closure of Ternate airport - a main hub for the Maluku Islands. The AP reported state volcanologist Surono as saying that Mount Gamalama spewed clouds of thick gray ash into the air late on Sunday. Slow moving red lava was also visible. Ternate airport, which lies just 30km from the volcano, was closed on Monday. No injuries have been reported.
