Taiwan to ban shark finning

Published on Dec 2, 2011

Luxury hotels in Taiwan have refused to ban shark fin soup from their menu, failing to follow the example of Peninsula Hotels, which recently ban the dish from its hotel restaurants. The choice may not be theirs, however, after the Taiwanese government drafted laws for an outright ban on shark finning in 2012. This is a major coup for anti-fi nning campaigners, as it will see the fourth largest shark fin industry in the world become the first Asian nation to ban the practice. According to Time Magazine, the law does not actually ban fisherman from catching sharks entirely, but it does make it illegal to bring the fish back in pieces.
