China fosters tourism growth in Tibet

The Chinese government has revealed plans for tourism growth in Tibet. During the 12th five-year plan (2010-15), authorities have set a target of receiving 15 million visitors each year. This is expected to generate CNY18 billion (US$2.8 billion) and create 300,000 jobs in tourism and related industries by 2015. With development focused on the high-end market, tourism will represent 50% of the service sector in the autonomous region by this date. To achieve this however, the Chinese government will need to keep Tibet open to international visitors all year round, rather than suspending travel the region at certain times of year, as it has been prone to do in recent years, in an eff ort to quell reports of unrest.
