China restores ancient Buddhist statue

A famous Buddhist statue near the Chinese city of Chongqing is being restored. Xinhua reported that the CNY40 million (US$6.3 million) project will repair and repaint the Qianshou Guanyin statue, which features a 1,000-armed ‘bodhisattva’ with an eye in the palm of each hand. The 800 year-old statue had suff ered multiple cracks and lost fi ngers. The statue lies in a cave forming part of the Dazu Grottoes – a UNESCO World Heritage site.
