Privatising historic buildings in Yangon
Published on Nov 1, 2011
As Myanmar drives development of its tourist industry at high speed, a government official has suggested selling off old colonial buildings to private buyers. Dr Khin Shwe, Chairman of Myanmar Tourism Board, has called on the Yangon City Development Committee to save the 189 registered heritage sites, which are quickly falling off the city map. To do so, Shwe suggested these properties be sold to private owners such as hoteliers. The idea has not been welcomed by all however, with Myanmar Times sources saying that buildings of such historical significance should remain in government care. At the heart of the debate is the old government Secretariat which some would like to see made into a museum, arguing that it was not designed to be a hotel.
