China to convert factories into art zones

Published on Sep 23, 2011

An abandoned factory in the UNESCO-listed city of Pingyao, in China’s Shanxi province, will be transformed an artistic community. Xinhua reported the Art Director of the seven-day Pingyao International Photography Festival, Zhang Guotian, as saying this week that the discarded diesel engine plant, which is a major display area for the on-going event, will be developed into a base for photo exhibitions, museums and photography training. An old textile mill and knitting mill will also be developed into art zones, Zhang added. The walled city of Pingyao has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
