Pizza firms in space race

Published on Sep 5, 2011

Domino’s Pizza in Japan has announced plans to open the first restaurant on the moon. The publicity stunt is the next step in its space race with Pizza Hut which delivered pizza to astronauts on the international space station back in 2001. Construction fi rm Maeda Corp was commissioned to design the extra-terrestrial restaurant which will cost an estimated JPY1.67 trillion (US$21.7 billion). The two-storey dome, with basement, will require 70 tonnes of building-materials and restaurant equipment to be transported to the moon on 15 separate rockets. The company began considering the project a year ago but has not yet set an opening date. A spokesperson told the Daily Telegraph; “In the future, we anticipate there will be many people living on the moon, astronauts who are working there and, in the future, citizens of the moon.”
