Indonesia withdraws New7Wonders entry, says minister

Indonesia has withdrawn its nomination of the Komodo National Park as a contender for the New7Wonders of nature, according to local media reports. The Jakarta Globe reported yesterday that the government relinquished its candidacy saying the New7Wonders Foundation selection process was unfair. The country’s Culture & Tourism Minister, Jero Wacik is reported to have announced the withdrawal. Indonesia and New7Wonders Foundation became embroiled in a row earlier this year after the country declined to foot the bill for organising the final event in November, which is estimated to cost up to US$10 million. It is unclear whether Wacik has discussed this with New7Wonders however; voting for Komodo was still open on the organisation’s official website this morning.
