A Moment in the Highway North into Dong Van, Vietnam

Photographer Aaron Joel Santos went way off the grid to capture this shot of a part of Vietnam so wild it’s still sometimes nicknamed Frontier Land.

The highway north into Dong Van, Vietnam, is a winding passage through a forgotten moonscape—black rocks scattered across the mountains and cornfields, and craggy peaks rising out of the surrounding rice paddies. Find old footpaths and follow them to a small village or two... to peaceful hamlets with majestic views and dirt lanes, seemingly cut off from the modern world. There’s a reason it’s called the Frontier Land. It’s still wild and unexplored, a place to get lost and found. —AARON JOEL SANTOS
