Long considered a leading pioneer in eco-conscious luxury, Gili Lankanfushi, a private-island oasis in the North Malé Atoll in the Maldives, is gearing up to welcome guests to its idyllic shores this December after a top-to-toe refurbishment. When the resort first opened in 2012, it earned widespread praise both for its incredible commitment to protecting the surrounding environment and for its sophisticated approach to rustic, yet refined accommodations.

While designers have been careful to stay true to the resort’s original barefoot-chic ethos, they’ve included a number of striking additions. Every single piece of bespoke furniture in the fully redesigned interiors is made from upcycled materials by master craftsmen. From the bedframes made from salvaged teakwood to the lampshades fashioned from recycled wire mesh to resemble marine life, these elements create a beautiful space unlike any other.

Our favorite feature (aside from the dedicated butler that comes with every single villa) might be the rooftop daybeds, which come with luxe linens so that guests can sleep under the stars, if they so choose.

In addition to having the largest overwater villa in the world, the newly reopened resort will feature all sorts of new experiences for guests to enjoy. Holistic Healing caters to guests looking to reconnect and center themselves. The five-night program includes daily yoga classes, a one-on-one consultation on arrival, bespoke treatments, an essential oil blending workshop, and more. Meanwhile, Dive & Discover is a five-night program for adventurously inclined guests. Spend your days diving with a marine biologist and indulge in a deep-tissue massage to recover. Finally, Surf & Spa is a four-night program that combines the best of both worlds, with a mix of daily sunrise yoga sessions, surfing lessons on the lagoon, and more.
