For years, Japan has been one of the world’s top tourism destinations, with millions of travelers each year streaming into cities like Kyoto and Tokyo. Yet while the country’s most popular areas can sometimes feel crowded, there are still less trammeled areas just off the beaten track.

Sendai, the capital of Miyagi Prefecture and the largest city in the Tohoku region, is blessed with spectacular natural scenery. The coastal city boasts a striking geographic diversity, stretching from flat plains all the way up to the lofty peak of Mount Funagata. The Hirose River, which winds through the city center, is so known for its beauty that singer Muneyuki Sato incorporated it into a love ballad.

The city also has a wide array of cultural attractions, including Aoba Castle, a historic feudal fortress that offers panoramic views. Travelers should also be sure to take a cruise around Matsushima Bay and to visit Sendai’s many soothing onsen. Sacred places of worship, such as the Osaki Hachimangu Shrine, offer a tranquil escape from the mundane.

In winter, colder temps turn Sendai turns into a wintery hub, with serval ski resorts only an hour away. But off-season means mild, pleasant weather, which makes Sendai's many special festivals and cultural events that much more enjoyable. The Sendai Tanabata Festival attracts more than 2 million visitors each year, while the Johzenji Street Jazz Festival and the Sendai International Music Competition are absolute musts for music-lovers.

Now, Sendai is more accessible than ever. Starting October 29, 2019, Thai Airways will begin offering roundtrip flights directly from Bangkok to Sendai. Travelers can fly in style from this international hub and discover all that this vibrant Japanese city has to offer.
