It's not every day that you come across a resort based on five elements representing Earth, Metal, Fire, Water and Wood. But that's what the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort does at every turn. This beach oasis is immersed in the myth and beauty of Vietnam.

Designer Bill Bensley spent years visiting the country's Buddhist temples, palaces and villages to give the resort a unique architectural vocabulary, one that incorporates a striking black-and-white color scheme. Bensley blurred the lines between high and low culture, resulting in an infinity pool with dramatic East Sea panorama, complete with showerheads fashioned from Central Highlands hill-tribe baskets.

Beyond the comforts of the resort lays the Son Tra Nature Reserve, home to nearly 1,000 species of plants, more than 100 birds, and a variety of mammals and reptiles. Join a daily trekking excursion to a 1,000-yearold Banyan tree that offers breathtaking views along the way.

Every trip to Vietnam requires excellent cuisine. La Maison 1888, overseen by chef Pierre Gagnaire, is the first restaurant in the country featuring a Michelin-starred chef. La Maison 1888's setting tells the story of a French-Eurasian family through its design. You'll encounter the Vietnamese theme of five elements of taste—sour, bitter, sweet, spicy and salty. Every meal here is an effort to balance out these five tastes, as well as to appeal to the five senses.
