Straddling the equator for almost 3,000 kilometers, Indonesia offers stunning nature and mind blowing culture and some of the world’s hottest surf spots.

A great place to start is Lombok. The island has several prized beach destinations including secluded Tanjung A’an, a perfect spot for snorkeling, and Senggigi with its cluster of upscale resorts. Adventurers can visit waterfalls or scale Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second highest mountain. Lombok’s indigenous culture, meanwhile, can be sampled at a traditional Sasak tribal village. Visitors can also take a spin in a horse-drawn cart, shop for pearls and local textiles, experience crafts such as pottery and weaving, and taste delicacies like ayam taliwang (spicy grilled chicken) and plecing kangkung (tangy water spinach).

Another mind-blowing destination is Yogyakarta, regarded as the cradle of Javanese arts. Browse examples of batik and shop for silverware, check out a wayang kulit (traditional puppet) show, hitch a ride on a horse cart and finish your day with a delicious street feast. Mount Merapi provides the backdrop to the stunning Buddhist and Hindu temple complexes at Borobudur and Prambanan.

High in the mountains of West Java, Bandung offers easy access to nature such as Kawah Putih, a gorgeous crater lake. Glamping opportunities abound at Dusun Bambu, an eco-park that synchronizes traditional culture and sustainable living, and several elevated dining venues make it easy to enjoy a meal with a view. Aside from its delicious cool weather, the city is most famous for its malls and factory clothing outlets.

Thrills can be found the length of the archipelago. In Sumatra, the Mentawai Islands are bombarded by barrels of surf while hubs such as Semarang in north Java, Makassar on the island of Sulawesi and, of course, Bali are gateways to world class diving, superlative cuisine, cultural highlights and more. With so much to discover, the time is ripe for an Indonesian odyssey.
