Colonial Elegance Meets Island-Chic at La Veranda Resort Phu Quoc

Stepping onto a palm-fringed bay on Phu Quoc still feels like stumbling upon a forgotten piece of paradise. While many of the region’s islands have fallen prey to mass tourism, this dreamy speck in the Gulf of Thailand has retained its sleepy vibe and natural splendor. Though it feels worlds away from urban civilization, Vietnam’s largest island is only a 50-minute flight from Saigon. Situated on a picturesque stretch of coastline, La Veranda Resort Phu Quoc, a member of the MGallery by Sofitel Collection, combines stunning tropical scenery with French-colonial charm.

La Veranda owes its Old World aesthetic to founder Madame Catherine and her family’s deep-rooted ties to both the island itself and colonial Indochine. Inspired by her childhood growing up under French rule, Madame Catherine decided to create a seaside abode that channeled the elegance of a 1920s French-colonial mansion. From the four-poster king-size beds to the period collectibles to the hand-painted mosaic tiles, every element of the resulting resort realizes her vision. Paintings by local artists line the walls and each of the 70 rooms boasts a private balcony or terrace from which to survey either the lush surrounding gardens or the turquoise waters.

A blend of French and Vietnamese cultures also finds its way onto the table at La Veranda, where chefs serve innovative dishes inspired by both cuisines. Exceptional local produce and pristine seafood shine in all sorts of recipes, some of which are more than a century old.

Madame Catherine originally created La Veranda to serve as her home. Today, when guests enter, they’re treated to the same warm welcome and hospitality that she might have once offered her guests, as well as a glimpse of a more romantic epoch.
