The Overview
Built in 1910, two of the four remaining Whitfield Barracks reopened in 2005 after years of painstaking restoration work. Now the home of the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre, the complex also includes a glass-paneled modern structure—an innovation that received an approving nod from UNESCO last year. Today, the center hosts exhibitions on the city’s architecture and restoration projects. Pick up the free map to the Central and Western Heritage Trail, which offers snippets of information on Hong Kong Island’s architectural gems.
