The Overview

For nearly a decade, food writer and consultant Rohani Jelani has been imparting her culinary secrets to Kuala Lumpur’s cooks. Now, gastronomically minded out-of-towners can get in on the action: after months of renovations, the Cordon Bleu–trained Jelani has unveiled her former home as Bayan Indah, a boutique guesthouse cum culinary retreat set in a peaceful Malay kampung 25 minutes from downtown Kuala Lumpur.

Half-day classes focus on everything from Spanish cuisine to Nyonya classics and are held four times a week in the well-equipped, breezy kitchen, finishing with a meal. It’s best to consult the schedule before booking at rohanijelani.com. If you’re booking rooms with friends, arranging a special class on the cuisine of your choice. (A roomy seminar room in an adjacent building is also available.)
