Once a year, in honor of the end of winter according to the Hindu calendar, the population of Gujarat takes to the streets and rooftops to fly kites. The colorful creations, ranging from simple to elaborate, fill the skies from dawn to dusk. The popular phenomenon, known as Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan, is an exuberant, fun-filled expression of the region’s spirit.
