Shanghai Mansion

Set in a former Chinese opera house, Shanghai Mansion brings a touch of glamour and vintage cool to Yaowarat, Bangkok’s historic Chinatown district.
479-481 Yaowaraj Road, Samphantawong, Bangkok, Thailand

The Overview
The first and only boutique hotel in Chinatown, the hotel is housed in an architectural landmark: a nine-story building constructed in 1892 that was the first such edifice of its height to stand stall in Chinatown. Every detail of this restored property is reminiscent of the resplendent 1930s Shanghai, from the plush crimson leather sofas and black-and-white-tiled floors in the lobby to alluring portraits of Chinese ladies and an old-fashioned—and working—gramophone in the restaurant. The Oriental charm is extended to the 76 guestrooms: the vividly hued interiors are kitted out with expansive beds, wooden lattice walls, art-deco lamps and canopied beds.

Don't forget to visit Shanghai Mansion's Cotton bar and restaurant for a shot of live jazz, and sometimes a chaser of blues, while the water garden in the central courtyard offers a tranquil spot for soothing quzheng (traditional Chinese zither) tunes. Make the most of the hotel's strategic location by exploring the maze of alleyways, temples and countless street-food stalls that make up the bustling Yaowarat.
