Sofitel So
The Overview
Abutting Rama IV and Sathorn Road in the capital's frenetic financial district, this much-hyped property is geared toward artsy, style-minded types as much as business travelers—check-ins are done via iPads and in-room tech amenities are powered by Apple Mac mini. The 30-story, curvy exterior was done by Smith Obayawat, and the country's top design brains—Pongthep Sagulku (August Design), Vitoon Kunalungkarn (IAW Design), Nithi Sthapitanonda (49 Group), Somchai Jongsaeng (Deca Atelier) and Rujiraporn Wanglee (PIA Interior)—were hired for their creative take on the interiors based on the elements of water, earth, wood, metal and fire. Among the 238 guest rooms, the Metal rooms stand out with minimalist, stark white interiors, while the Earth rooms offer a study of eclectic styles, juxtaposing walls overlaid with Thai primeval murals and cobalt blue tones with black-and-white-tiled bathrooms. Further adding to Sofitel So’s impressive design credo is fashion maverick Christian Lacroix, who put his flamboyant touches on the Tree of Life hotel emblem.
T+L Tip Partially cantilevered on the 29th floor, Park Society & Hi-So is the perfect rooftop roost to take in 360-degree views of the adjacent Lumpini Park and Chao Phraya River in the distance.
