Charcoal Bangkok

The Overview

Charcoal takes the classic tropes of your run-of-the-mill Indian restaurant and turns them on their head. Gone are the heavy velvet drapery, the gold painted statues, and yes, even the curries. In their place, you'll find a faintly masculine and far more understated ode to the subcontinent just off of one of Bangkok's busiest nightlife streets.

Despite the fact that the décor calls to mind a steakhouse, Charcoal has most definitely not forgotten the motherland. The subtle patterns on these dark walls are derived from mosques; sly, broken English signs adorn the bathrooms; and the well-balanced cocktails, which run the gambit from the gently sweet New Delhi Duty Free to the deadly strong Kolkata Rickshaw Fuel, incorporate a whole market's worth of imported spices. The chefs from the open kitchen were specially brought in too, as were the massive, polished copper tandoor ovens. And the assortment of kebabs is as resolutely authentic as it gets. The marinated lamb chops are exceptional, as is the murgh malai—pale, extraordinarily tender chunks of chicken. Although the menu caters to carnivores, there's plenty for vegetarians as well, including the creamy black-lentil dal and ultra-rich paneer.
