The Overview

The opening of Sri Malaya marked a homecoming of sorts for affable owner Ocean Teh, who grew up in the city before moving to the suburbs with his family at age 13. Occupying the ground floor of a refurbished shop house (Teh lives upstairs) just off busy Chulia Street, Teh’s inviting restaurant has gold-yellow walls trimmed in white, contemporary dark-timber furniture, terra-cotta-tile floors and a cozy inner courtyard. Its menu reflects Teh’s eclectic tastes, ranges widely from coconut milk-enriched spicy Sarawak laksa to meaty braised lamb shanks. Order the Malaya spaghetti, a fiery tangle of chewy pasta seasoned with chopped chilies, lime juice and Thai basil.
