Behind Buddhist temples Wat In Paeng is the T’Shop Lai Galerie, which has turned its rooftop terrace into a center that raises awareness of the plight of Laos’s elephants. (Laos was once known as the Land of a Million Elephants. Today, the population has dwindled to around 2,000.) Called the La Maison de l’Elephant, the center also features a café and shop—all proceeds from which go toward conservation programs.
