Vientiane

Delightfully perched on the banks of the majestic Mekong, Vientiane’s blooming streets, riverside promenade and backwater attractions make it a charming attraction for visitors. Armed with their friendly and cheerful smiles, the natives of Vientiane reinforce the city’s relaxed and laid-back demeanor. An evening cruise down the Mekong with its colonial treasures and cozy-thatched bars while enjoying a cold Beer Lao is a definite highlight of this quiet, sleepy city.

Hotels

Vientiane has numerous types of accommodation ranging from basic guesthouses to comfortable boutique-style hotels. While one may not find the usual international hotel chains, the local luxury hotels do meet international standards with some high-quality restaurants and facilities.

Food & Drink

Apart from the traditional noodle shops dotting the city, several trendy restaurants and eateries ply their trade in the city. Many of these are located at the Mekong riverfront providing sensational views of the river while entertaining guests with local and international cuisines over a bottle of cold Beerlao.

Shopping

Vientiane’s Talat Sao (Morning Market) is a fascinating place to check out handicrafts, silk items, textiles, electronics, watches, and books. Those looking for upscale malls are likely to be disappointed as the only malls located here are simple affairs with basic shops, cafes and foot courts.

Nightlife

Vientiane’s nascent nightlife scene is mostly limited to bamboo-and-thatch beer gardens lining the Mekong, pubs and a few bars along Thanon Setthathirat. Some nightclubs can be found in luxury hotels such as Novotel and the Don Chan Palace hotel.
