Bandung

A plateau town set 750 meters above sea level, Bandung is famed for its cooler highland temperatures, historical Art-Deco architecture and colorful Sundanese culture. Once the planned capital of Dutch-controlled Indonesia before World War II, this west Javanese town used to be known as the “Paris of Java.” Today, it continues to maintain its idyllic charm and slower pace, which might explain why throngs from Jakarta flock here during weekends to escape the rat race.

Bandung boasts a vibrant fashion and textile scene. Cihampelas Street is lined with many denim-clothing stores while many old colonial houses have been converted into factory outlets stocking famous brands to the likes of Louis Vuitton, Banana Republic and Calvin Klein. Of late, young fashionistas have started the “distro” (shortened from “distribution outlet”) movement of selling stylish, indie products made locally.
