The Overview

Posted on December 7, 2016

Perched on the edge of the breathtaking Ayung River Gorge in Kedewatan Village, Amandari has done its best to grow organically within its surrounding community, honoring at every turn the Balinese culture embedded in its DNA. Private villas constructed with indigenous ecru-colored stone line the resort’s gorgeous landscape, intertwined with small lanes and shadefilled corridors that recall Bali’s ancient subak or irrigation canals. A grand candi bentar, a split gate symbolic of a spiritual passage, divides the resort’s grassy lawn, carving a pathway for village women to ferry offerings to Pura Beji Dalem Swargan, a striking temple tucked in the folds of the canyon below. Village children take traditional dance classes in one of the resort’s bougainvillea and fern-filled courtyards, and guests are encouraged to watch (or join in!). Amenities include a daily gift of a local craft—handcarved animal figurines, classically painted bookmarks—all from local aritisan communities. Meanwhile, the resort’s kitchen stocks produce, meats and spices from nearby farms, doing their bit to support the island’s organic farming practices. amandari.com; doubles from US$900.
