The Overview

In case the cheeky name—the Chinese characters of which translate to "mother," "tongue" and "luck"—didn't tip you off, this is one ballsy restaurant. After all, few foreigners would dare to take on Cantonese cuisine on its home turf, but that's exactly what Taiwan-born, Canadian-educated and Australian-trained chef Jowett Yu does with aplomb. Dishes like beef short ribs, which are slow-cooked overnight, deep-fried and then soy-glazed before being paired with jalapeño purée and kimchi vegetables, are rooted in local traditions, yet gloriously original.
